Lid struts: functionality explained
Gas lid struts, much like mechanical springs, serve as energy reservoirs. The primary difference lies in how the energy is stored – a gas strut uses compressed nitrogen gas within its sealed system, instead of applying physical tension to a spring.
Unlike pneumatic or hydraulic cylinders that need an external energy source to generate movement, gas struts are self-sufficient, requiring no extra energy input post-manufacturing. This is due to the sealed nature of the gas strut, which retains a constant internal pressure, whether it’s fully extended or fully compressed.
The question then arises, how does a gas strut work if it does not require any additional gas and the internal pressure remains constant? The secret lies in the design of the strut. The strut extends because of the difference in the cross-sectional area of the rod. The nitrogen gas pressure acting on the internal face of the rod and the atmospheric pressure on the external end creates a disparity that causes the rod to extend.
As the rod is pushed into the tube, the volume available decreases. This action compresses the gas and increases the internal pressure, causing the strut to mimic the behavior of a spring. Furthermore, a small opening in the piston, known as an orifice, controls the flow of gas across the piston. This allows for control over the extension speed. Through a blend of smart design and physics, gas lid struts provide an invaluable blend of safety and convenience in numerous applications.
Our Free-to-Use Online Tools
We aim to simplify the process of shopping for gas springs, ensuring a user-friendly experience for all. We have developed a set of easy-to-use online tools for calculating, replacing, and customizing gas struts. We currently have three tools available: the Calculator, Replacement, and Configurator tool.
Calculator tool
The Calculator tool provides an interactive interface featuring a 3D rendering of the project and several open fields to be filled. These fields require metrics relating to the application such as dimensions, weight, pivot point, and more. After filling out the information, click ‘calculate’. You will receive essential information such as the required force in Newtons to support the application, the most ideal mounting position, and a suggestion for the perfect supporting gas struts. These struts can be ordered in just a few simple steps.
Replacement tool
The Replacement tool enables you to find replacement lid struts in seconds. This straightforward tool includes a text field for you to enter (a part of) the article number found on the old strut. After input, the tool searches our extensive database for an exact match. Once a match is found, it will be displayed for your verification. You can then order the replacement lid strut easily.
Configurator tool
The Configurator tool is designed for experienced users to fully customize a gas strut to perfectly suit their needs. This tool presents an interactive interface where you can choose between different materials, gas struts, and mounting parts. Once you’re finished, you can view a 3D rendering of your configuration. The final step is to select the amount of force in Newtons required to support the application. After successful configuration, the customized lid strut can be ordered in a few simple steps.
